Using powerful computer to search for optimal well locations that produce most and cost least is a holy grail for reservoir engineering. Limited by model accuracy and computational speed, by and large, this kind of technologies are still not suited for large-scale well placement optimization in a commercial setting.
How long do we have to wait until Quantum Computer gets mature, that we can properly solve optimization problem at this level?
Maybe, this problem can be partially solved before then. We see that a significant speed boost can be achieved by improving the optimization algorithm, reduce the dimensions of the solution space, and combine the engineering approach and numerical simulation approach.
iRes-Geo has created in-house software for assisted well placement optimization. It has been tested on multiple models. A result of 30%-60% increase in production has been achieved with the same number of wells.
