The Industry Challenge: Various mechanisms can cause deformations of a well casing that can inhibit well access and in severe circumstances, affect the pressure integrity of the casing and the zonal isolation of the well cement. Deformation mechanisms can include salt creep, reservoir compaction, movement along shear planes and faults and temperature changes. Understanding which mechanisms have caused the deformation is required for operators to select appropriate well remediation activities and to design future wells to resist these same failures. Conventional methods of visualizing such well deformations using borehole televiewers and impression blocks do not provide enough information to differentiate between different deformation mechanisms. These methods also do not provide quantitative measurements of the deformations that could be used to classify, track or predict the progression of the deformation over time.How Well Xplore helps: C-FER’s Well Xplore™ (formerly CalTran) software use multi-finger caliper data to accurately determine the local trajectory in well tubulars. The deformed shape of the tubular and wellbore provide critical information about the form and magnitude of the deformation, potential access limitations, indications of wellbore structural integrity and potential loss of hydraulic isolation, as well as the underlying mechanisms responsible for the deformation. These insights are useful in a wide range of applications including enhanced and thermal recovery, shale developments, geothermal operations, tectonically active areas, hydraulically fractured reservoirs, formation subsidence in cold heavy oil production, subsalt and permafrost applications. Well Xplore™ uses the caliper tool geometry, and the measurements of ovality and eccentricity relative to the pipe centre to calculate the local curvature of the pipe at each reading station. The curvature and well orientation determined at each station are then assembled to produce a three-dimensional image of the local well trajectory and any deformation. The results from Well Xplore™ analyses can be used to calibrate structural models of the interaction between the well casing, cement and formation that predict the loading mechanisms and magnitudes required to cause the observed deformations. With these validated loading models, the performance of alternative completion configurations such as heavy wall casing or cemented pipe‑in‑pipe under the same loading conditions can be evaluated.
