Single, wire wrapped screens are commonly used for sand control. Compared to pre-packed screens they are not as easily plugged by drilling mud and the sand control method is a fine balance between production objectives and completion choices.
Due to limitations in traditional design criteria, use of single wrapped screens has often resulted in plugging problems and these screens have earned an unfair reputation of bad performance in the industry.Use of single wrapped screens has a lot of advantages and if properly designed the solution is both simple and effective and thus it can lead to major reductions in well construction costs.
Work performed by International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) (SPE 31087) on a large database of a reservoir sands from the North Sea and Haltenbanken indicates that with proper design criteria the single wrapped screens can be successfully applied. The new design criteria is established from a statistical analysis of a considerable number of sieve samples.
